Rohit's Story

From Rescue to Forever Home

It was a regular day, I was going from the railway station to my house, and just outside the station, I came across this frightening scene where four dogs were attacking a small kitten. A lot of people were trying to rescue the kitten but the kitten was in deep shock and was unwilling to go to anyone. Legend has it that cats, with their discerning nature, have a mysterious power to select their human soulmates, creating a bond that is truly unique and special. He came close to me and let me pick him up. When I held him in my arms, his whole body was shivering and I could sense how scared and injured he was.

His leg was broken into two. I first got him the necessary medical attention but then the reality dawned on me. If I left him outside only, some other animal would have attacked him as he was really tiny and fragile, and as I was living in a shared accommodation, I couldn’t alone have taken the decision to keep him.

After a lot of contemplation, I decided to at least foster him for a few days until I was able to find him a new home. I took him home with me with the hope that his cute little face will convince my flatmates to let him stay with us for a few days.  Convincing them was far easier than I had expected it to be. What was difficult was the initial days when he was trying to adapt to the new environment and I was trying to understand the right way and approach towards him. I lovingly used to call him Manu.

While my roommates were not particularly fond of animals, Manu managed to win them over. We used to come in the lunch hours of our college time to feed him. It took nearly a month for him to fully recover, and during that time, I turned to the internet for guidance. I searched for answers to various questions about his food habits, his sleeping pattern, the required vaccinations to even pooping solutions. However, it was a struggle to sift through all the information and find reliable sources. I wished there was a single resource that could provide all the information I needed.

Even though I had decided to foster him for a few days, he became such an integral part of my life that I decided to adopt him. I even moved into a separate flat to give him space to play around and grow, to give him a home of his own. At that point in time, my mother also temporarily moved in with me. Initially, she was not happy with the idea of having a pet in the house as I was mostly going to be out for the day and she was the one who would have to take care of the kitten. But his antics and his warmth made her change her perspective and I can proudly say that after my brother and me, Manu is her 3rd child (and definitely the most pampered one!)

Now when I look back at that fateful day, I realize that sometimes, the most unexpected moments can change our lives in unimaginable ways. For me, it was that day 8 years ago when I met my feline soulmate, and it was one of the best things that ever happened to me.
